Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo, known for his exceptional portrayal of occultic characters in films like Billionaire’s Club, Ritualist, and Blood Money, recently shared a harrowing experience where his fictional roles seemingly attracted attention from a real-life secret brotherhood.
In a personal testimony, the actor revealed that his frequent interpretation of dark, occultic roles led to an unsettling invitation to join a popular brotherhood in Benin. He credits his unwavering faith and connection to Christ for helping him navigate the situation.
According to Kanayo, the incident occurred in 2005 when he returned home from work. While unpacking his briefcase, he discovered a sealed red envelope he had no recollection of placing there. Out of curiosity, he opened it and found a brief but alarming message:
“You know too much. Join us.”
The note also contained an address directing him to appear at a specific roundabout in Benin. Kanayo described the discovery as deeply unsettling, triggering immediate panic as he wondered how the envelope ended up in his possession and why he was targeted.
Rather than alarming his wife, whom he believed would react with shock, Kanayo opted to seek spiritual counsel. He called his pastor in the dead of night, unable to sleep due to anxiety.
The pastor, understanding the gravity of the situation, provided words of comfort while also pointing out the spiritual implications of Kanayo’s work. “You have mimicked the devil for too long. It’s time to decide where you truly belong,” the pastor reportedly told him.
Kanayo reaffirmed his faith, replying, “Daddy, I belong to Jesus. I’m just an entertainer trying to make a living.” His pastor reassured him, saying, “It is well with your soul. Go to sleep.”
The actor’s experience sheds light on the blurred lines between art and reality, particularly in a society where superstition and spirituality often intersect. While Kanayo maintains that his work is purely for entertainment, this chilling incident underscored the spiritual challenges that come with certain portrayals in Nollywood.
