Former Man United winger Nani announces shock retirement from football

Former Manchester United winger Nani has surprisingly announced his retirement from football at the age of 38.

The Portuguese was still very much active, playing his football in his country’s top flight with Estrela Amadora.

However, it appears that the tragic death of his father prompted the veteran to put an end to his days on the pitch so he could spend more time with his family. He revealed his decision in a statement posted on his X account that included a three-minute video announcement.

“The time has come to say goodbye, I have decided to finish my career as a professional player.

“It’s been an amazing ride and I wanted to thank every single person who has helped me and supported me through the highs and lows during a career which lasted over 20 years and gave me so many unforgettable memories.

“Time to turn a new leaf and focus on new goals and dreams. See you soon!”

Former Man United star Nani calls it a day

Nani emulated his more famous countryman Cristiano Ronaldo by signing for Man United after rising through the ranks at Sporting CP.

While he couldn’t quite reach the heights of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, the 38-year-old certainly had his moments at Old Trafford, including winning the Premier League on four occasions under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson. He also lifted the Champions League trophy in his maiden season at the club.

Nani scored 40 goals and produced 70 assists in his 230 appearances for the Red Devils, before making his return to Sporting in 2014.

The winger then went on to represent a host of clubs around Europe, including Fenerbahce, Valencia and Lazio, before ending his career with a brief spell at Estrela Amadora
