David de Gea may have departed Manchester United on questionable terms in 2023, but he remains an avid fan of the club he dedicated 12 years of his career to.

The veteran shot-stopper is now plying his trade in Italy with Fiorentina, whom he joined as a free agent following a one-year break from professional football in the aftermath of his Red Devils release.

In his 29 Serie A appearances since signing, De Gea has tallied a respectable 11 clean sheets while recording an average Sofascore rating of 7.26.

He has saved two penalties, and is now in with a chance of reaching the Europa Conference League semi-finals if La Viola can defend – or extend – their lead against Celje in Thursday’s quarter-final second leg; De Gea had initially been rested in the competition with backup ‘keeper Pietro Terracciano taking his place between the sticks, but has now been restored to the starting XI for the last two fixtures.

This afternoon, the Spaniard took to X/Twitter to showcase his admiration for United Women’s No.1 Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

Marc Skinner’s Reds oversaw an emphatic victory in an FA Cup semi-final derby against Manchester City on Sunday to book their spot in the final, where they’ll face WSL leaders Chelsea, for the second successive season, having claimed their first piece of silverware with a 4-0 triumph over Tottenham Hotspur last May.

Goals from Celin Bizet and Grace Clinton established United a healthy two-goal advantage inside 25 minutes, while Tullis-Joyce’s heroics in the 56th minute kept the lead intact; she initially denied Yui Hasegawa’s free-kick with a tremendous acrobatic save onto the crossbar before recovering quickly enough to get a leg to Lily Murphy’s follow-up header from point-blank range.

The USWNT international, who succeeded Mary Earps over the summer, has earned widespread praise for her ‘unbelievable’ double save, with De Gea himself reacting to the passage of play with a simple: “WOW”.
