A man simply identified as David Nwokorie, has finally breathed the air of freedom after being arrested and locked up over a messy break-up with the daughter of a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Hilary Opara.
David Nwokorie became a free man after human rights activist Omoyele Sowore learnt of his predicament and waded in.
He was romantically involved with Opara’s daughter, Genevieve Opara, until recently when they fell apart and became sworn enemies to the extent that the ex-girlfriend instigated the police to arrest her former lover.
Genevieve accused Nwokorie of cyberbullying and blackmail.
According to Nwokorie’s lawyer, Barrister Ezike Chibuzor, cracks appeared in the retationship between the two lovebirds when the man found out that Genevieve had been previously married and had two children.
Nwokories believed it was dishonest of Genevieve to hide that critical aspect of her life from him and the matter escalated quickly, leading to him calling off the relationship.
Things reportedly got worse in January when Genevieve allegedly found out that David had proposed to another woman.
Nwokorie alleged that Genevieve came to his apartment and destroyed some of his property.
He then demanded N25 million as compensation. He went further to make a digital flyer with her picture, saying she was “wanted” for the damages.
Genevieve, a Deputy Manager at the National Pension Commission, claimed David sent her disturbing messages after their breakup.
David alleged in the text messages that Genevieve had mental health struggles, was emotionally unhealed, and secured her job based on her father’s influence.
The estranged boyfriend also called Genevieve unteachable and hot-headed.
In response, Genevieve filed a police complaint, leading to the arrest of Nwokorie last week.
Bail conditions were made stringent, which led to Nwokorie staying behind bars for longer than necessary.
According to SaharaReporters, the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) demanded two sureties for Nwokorie’s bail.
The sureties must either be Federal Government employees not below Grade Level 17, or businessmen with landed properties in Abuja covered by a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O). Alternatively, the sureties could be businessmen with registered companies and landed properties within the FCT valued at no less than ₦500 million.
If the sureties presented are federal government employees, they must provide letters of introduction from their respective organisations, valid identification cards, and other supporting documents.
Alternatively, if the sureties are businessmen, they must submit copies of their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration certificates, Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) for their landed properties in Abuja, and present the original documents for verification.
In both cases, the sureties are required to bring their passports and two recent passport photographs.
The matter later got to the attention of Sowore, who took an interest in the case and pursued it till the estranged lover was finally released.
