Man United drop interest in Vlahovic, identify Mateta as priority

Manchester United aren’t interested in signing Juventus bomber Dusan Vlahovic, as their current priority is named Jean-Philippe Mateta.

The Red Devils are on the verge of securing an accord with Matheus Cunha and his entourage. The Wolves star has a release clause worth £62.5 million that they can activate in case they fail to reach an agreement with his current employers over a transfer fee.

Although Cunha is a versatile attacker capable of playing as a centre-forward, United are still keen to sign an out-and-out striker with a killer instinct and a physical presence inside the box.

But according to TuttoJuve, this won’t be Vlahovic , as the latter is no longer an interesting option on MUFC’s shortlist.

The Serbian first rose to prominence during his time at Fiorentina, prompting Juventus to pay €80 million for his services in January 2022.

Back in his days in Florence, the 25-year-old was widely considered one of the most exciting young strikers in the world. At the time, Igor Tudor (who now coaches him at Juventus) insisted that Vlahovic was the best in Serie A, while snubbing Victor Osimhen.

“He [Victor Osimhen] is a strong player, but the strongest is Vlahovic. He’s one of the best,” said the Crotian manager at the time.

Moreover, the source adds Man United will instead pursue Mateta who has now emerged as the club’s main target to bolster the attack.

The 27-year-old Frenchman has been plying his trade at Crystal Palace since 2022, and has been enjoying a super campaign. He has so far contributed with 17 goals and four assists across competitions this term, raising his overall tally for the Eagles to 45 goals and 11 assists.

Mateta’s contract with Palace will expire in June 2026, so he represents a cheaper option compared to Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres, and is a more experienced profile than Liam Delap.

Nevertheless, the Italian report warns the Red Devils of competition coming from other European giants, especially Atletico Madrid.
