FG establishes special Committee to address road traffic accidents involving trailers, tankers

In a decisive move, the federal government (FG) has established a Special Committee focused on enhancing highway safety in Nigeria.

This committee aims to prevent frequent road traffic accidents involving trailers and tankers on critical highway sections.

The Minister of Transportation, Sen. Said Alkali, announced this initiative during a stakeholders’ meeting on April 28, 2025.

The meeting took place at the ministry’s conference room in Abuja, marking a strategic step towards mitigating recurring road accidents.

Thus, the FG aims to tackle the challenges faced by many Nigerians on their highways.

Sen. Alkali emphasized the urgent need to address this persistent problem, which has devastating consequences for citizens.

He stated, “The committee’s primary aim is to review and develop recommendations addressing the root causes of these accidents.”

Additionally, he mentioned implementing measures to enhance safety and develop mandatory training programs for drivers nationwide.

Furthermore, the Minister stressed the urgency of the task, giving the committee a one-week deadline to produce its report.

He highlighted that safety and efficiency are paramount in Mr. President’s development agenda, reflecting the administration’s dedication to improving transportation infrastructure and safety standards.

The newly established committee comprises key stakeholders in the transportation sector, ensuring a comprehensive approach to the issue.

Members include representatives from various organizations, such as the Road Transport Association of Nigeria and the Federal Road Safety Commission.

This collaborative effort is expected to yield actionable insights and strategies that significantly reduce road traffic accidents.
