NPF reactivates digital tinted glass permit system

Abuja, April 30, 2025 — In a significant effort to enhance national security and public confidence, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) announced reactivating the Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) system. This initiative, directed by Inspector-General of Police IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, addresses widespread public concerns regarding harassment related to tinted vehicle windows.

The reactivated system is accessible via https://possap.gov.ng, marking a crucial step toward creating a transparent process. This initiative acknowledges the trend of tinted windows in modern automobiles and seeks to establish a standardized approach that balances legitimate use with public safety concerns.

Tinted vehicles have often been exploited for criminal activities like kidnapping and armed robbery, obstructing police visibility. Thus, reactivating the permit system strategically distinguishes lawful users, including those with medical needs and security personnel, from illicit users. This measure aims to enhance investigative capabilities and strengthen national security efforts.

Moreover, the digital platform allows applicants to process permits online, integrating identity verification through the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN). Additionally, biometric capture and background checks ensure a thorough vetting process, issuing QR-coded digital permits with a streamlined processing timeline of 72 hours.

To facilitate compliance, a 30-day grace period begins on May 1st, 2025. Motorists must comply within this timeframe, as enforcement will commence thereafter. The NPF warns against unprofessional conduct, such as extortion or harassment by officers, promising decisive action according to disciplinary procedures.

Inspector-General Egbetokun reiterated the Force’s dedication to a technologically advanced, citizen-focused policing strategy. He urges public support for this initiative, aiming for safer roads and improved public trust.

This development underscores the NPF’s commitment to leveraging technology in addressing security challenges while fostering cooperation with the public.
