May 2, 2025- A recent World of Statistics report reveals only 29% of Nigerians enjoy clean, safe drinking water.

Globally, 73% of people use improved water sources like piped systems or boreholes.

However, Nigeria far behind due to urbanization, poor infrastructure, and economic struggles.

As a result, millions face daily hardships securing safe water.

Comparatively, Chad and the Central African Republic report just 6% access, while Sierra Leone and Ethiopia reach 10% and 13%.

Meanwhile, Mexico and the Philippines achieve 43% and 48%, showing Nigeria’s alarming disparity. Clearly, urgent action is needed to bridge this gap.

Experts link inadequate water access to deadly diseases, malnutrition, and high child mortality rates.

For instance, UNICEF estimates unsafe water kills over 100,000 Nigerian children under five yearly.

Therefore, solving this crisis could save countless lives.

Although the Nigerian government pledges improvement, progress remains slow.

Corruption, poor resource management, and underfunding stall infrastructure projects.

In cities, overcrowding worsens the problem, forcing many to use contaminated wells or rivers.

Activists demand immediate intervention, stressing water as a basic human right.

“We need collaboration between leaders and global partners,” argues Lagos advocate Amina Mohammed. Without swift action, the crisis will deepen.

Climate change further strains water resources, pushing Nigeria toward sustainable solutions like rainwater harvesting.

These innovations could ease shortages if implemented effectively.

In summary, 29% of Nigerians water access rate signals a dire health emergency.

Strengthening infrastructure and governance is essential to secure this vital resource for all citizens.
