23-yr-old who committed suicide was a prof’s son, not a student – Nasarawa varsity clarifies

Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), has clarified reports surrounding the sad death of 23-year-old Shebah Rilakwo Jatau, who was found dead in an apparent suicide at the institution’s senior staff quarters on April 27, 2025.
In a statement issued on Saturday, May 3, the university’s acting Information and Protocol Officer, Jaafar Abdullahi Abubakar, confirmed that the deceased was not a student of NSUK but the son of Professor Benson Shedrack Jatau, a staff member at the university.
“The Information and Protocol Unit of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, has been alerted to reports circulating in some online media outlets regarding the alleged death of a student of the University,” the statement read.

“We wish to categorically state that the individual in question, the late Shebah Rilakwo Jatau, who passed away on Monday, 28th April 2025, was not a student of Nasarawa State University, Keffi. He was the son of a staff member of the University.”
The university also confirmed that Shebah was buried on Thursday, May 1, 2025, in accordance with Christian rites.
NSUK urged the public to disregard false reports suggesting that the deceased was a student of the institution.
