Federal Government shuts down illegal mining site in Kaduna state

The Federal Government has successfully dismantled an illegal mining operation in Damau, Kubau Local Government Area, demonstrating its commitment to combating unlawful activities.

According to Segun Tomori, Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, this success stemmed from a strategic mix of community engagement and diplomatic measures.

Mining Marshals carried out the operation on a tin-rich site legally owned by Trobell Minerals Limited.

Previously, illegal miners had occupied the site for months, causing severe environmental damage and heightening insecurity.

As a result, legitimate stakeholders suffered substantial financial losses.

Unlike past confrontations at illegal sites, which often turned violent, this operation ended peacefully.

In other regions, enforcement efforts have led to clashes, injuries, and property destruction.

Therefore, the Damau success proves that combining dialogue with enforcement can effectively resolve illegal mining.

Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, praised this cooperative approach and urged communities nationwide to support government efforts.

Furthermore, he encouraged collaboration with Mining Marshals to expose and arrest illegal miners.

“The Kaduna operation sets a precedent for future interventions,” Dr. Alake emphasized.

He stressed that securing community support is crucial, as illegal mining fuels insecurity and stifles sector growth.

However, the Damau outcome shows that enforcement and dialogue together can produce positive results.

Additionally, the Minister commended the operatives and promised them more resources and operational support.

“The reward for hard work is more work,” he stated, reinforcing the government’s dedication to enhancing the Marshals’ efficiency.

Ultimately, the Damau resolution highlights how vital community involvement is in tackling mining sector challenges.

By promoting cooperation and innovative strategies, the Federal Government aims to create a safer, more sustainable environment for legal mining.

This approach not only protects stakeholders but also ensures long-term sector growth.

Moving forward, such collaborative efforts will remain key to eradicating illegal mining nationwide.
