NiDCOM Chairman hosts Chief of Mission Nigeria, IOM, at Abuja HQ

NiDCOM Chairman Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa welcomed IOM Nigeria Chief Sharon Dimanche during a strategic meeting in Abuja.
Both leaders discussed migration governance and collaborative solutions for global challenges.
They emphasized strengthening partnerships to protect diaspora Nigerians and address irregular migration. Dabiri-Erewa highlighted NiDCOM’s efforts to empower migrants through skill-building and legal support programs.
Sharon praised NiDCOM’s initiatives, pledging IOM’s support for joint projects. She outlined IOM’s current work in Nigeria, including counter-trafficking campaigns and reintegration schemes for returnees.
During talks, both parties agreed to streamline data-sharing mechanisms to track migration trends. This cooperation aims to enhance policy-making and crisis response for vulnerable communities.
Additionally, they explored expanding access to pre-departure training for aspiring migrants. Such programs would educate Nigerians on safe migration pathways and reduce exploitation risks abroad.
The meeting concluded with plans to co-host workshops targeting grassroots awareness. These sessions will focus on debunking human trafficking myths and promoting lawful migration alternatives.
Dabiri-Erewa reiterated NiDCOM’s commitment to safeguarding citizens globally, urging faster consular interventions for distressed migrants. Sharon echoed this, stressing IOM’s role in bridging institutional gaps.
Meanwhile, both organizations resolved to leverage technology for real-time migrant tracking. Mobile apps and hotlines will provide urgent assistance to Nigerians facing crises overseas.
The collaboration aligns with Nigeria’s National Migration Policy, which prioritizes citizen welfare and sustainable development. Stakeholders believe such alliances curb brain drain and harness diaspora expertise.
Following the visit, NiDCOM announced a task force to monitor agreed-upon actions. Progress reports will be shared quarterly to ensure transparency and accountability.
This partnership reflects growing global efforts to humanize migration governance. By uniting resources, NiDCOM and IOM aim to transform challenges into opportunities for national growth.
Local NGOs applauded the synergy, urging similar dialogues with other agencies. They argue holistic approaches are vital to dismantle trafficking networks and support survivors effectively.
As migration rates rise, proactive measures become critical. Dabiri-Erewa and Sharon’s talks signal hope for safer, more dignified journeys for Nigerians worldwide.
