Badaru rejects notion of terrorists outgunning Nigerian military

Defense Minister Mohammed Badaru firmly dismissed suggestions that terrorist groups surpass Nigeria’s armed forces in firepower during Wednesday’s ministerial briefing in Abuja. He asserted the military possesses far superior weapons and technology compared to insurgents operating nationwide.

The clarification came after House of Representatives members raised concerns following a Giwa military base attack in Borno State. Lawmakers had questioned whether Boko Haram now wields better equipment than security forces combating them.

Badaru explained the military’s challenges stem from terrorists’ unpredictable guerrilla tactics rather than equipment gaps. He noted insurgents exploit local informants and surveillance weaknesses to launch surprise attacks. “They monitor our movements through collaborators,” he stated, describing their hit-and-run strategies.

Regarding terrorist drone usage, the minister clarified they employ modified civilian drones rather than military-grade systems. He revealed intensified efforts to disrupt supply chains providing such equipment to insurgents through enhanced intelligence operations.

On domestic defense production, Badaru reported significant progress at the Defense Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON). Ten out of 53 companies in the complex already produce military hardware including drones and protective gear, with more facilities under construction.

The minister projected 20 companies would become fully operational by year’s end, with export potential emerging next year. He specifically mentioned revitalizing Ajaokuta’s industrial sector to strengthen DICON’s manufacturing capacity.

Badaru reassured Nigerians of government’s commitment to properly equipping security forces. He emphasized local production would both enhance national security and boost economic growth through future defense exports. The minister concluded by affirming military superiority over terrorist groups despite their unconventional tactics.

Authorities continue working to address security challenges while developing sustainable domestic defense solutions. Recent attacks have prompted calls for improved intelligence gathering and community cooperation to counter insurgent strategies effectively. The government maintains its position that terrorists lack technological or firepower advantages over Nigerian forces.
