Sudan cuts ties with UAE, citing blatant meddling

The Sudan government has severed diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates, (UAE).
Sudan authorities have accuse the UAE of backing the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan’s civil war.
Defence Minister Yassin Ibrahim announced the decision on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
He spoke after three days of airstrikes on Port Sudan, once considered a safe city.
The Sudanese army blames the RSF for those attacks.
Since Sunday, May 5, drones have hit Port Sudan’s airport, a hotel, and a power station.
On Wednesday, the army said it stopped a drone strike on its main naval base.
A military source told AFP: “They [the drones] were met with anti-aircraft missiles.”
Minister Ibrahim accused the UAE of using the RSF as a “proxy.”
He said the Gulf nation violated Sudan’s sovereignty.
Sudan embassy closure and ambassador recall
Sudan will now close its embassy in the UAE.
The country is also recalling its ambassador from Abu Dhabi.
The UAE denies all accusations of supporting the RSF.
Officials insist they offer no financial, military, or political help to the paramilitary group.
Sudan’s war has killed thousands and displaced millions over the past two years.
The conflict has triggered what the UN calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
Until now, Port Sudan had been spared from most attacks.
The city served as a key government and humanitarian hub.
Both the UK and US have urged countries to stop arming Sudan’s warring factions.
They specifically named the UAE in their warnings.
Global pressure and legal setback at UN court
This week, Sudan lost a legal battle against the UAE at the UN’s top court.
Sudan accused the UAE of complicity in genocide by supporting the RSF.
In a similar vein, NewsBand reported that the International Court of Justice has dismissed the case on jurisdictional grounds.
The court said the UAE opted out of Article 9 of the Genocide Convention.
That article allows countries to sue others for genocide allegations.
UAE official Reem Ketait called the ruling “clear and decisive.”
She urged the world to focus on ending Sudan’s war.
Ketait also called for urgent delivery of humanitarian aid.
Both the Sudanese army and RSF face accusations of war crimes.
The conflict shows no signs of slowing.
Sudan’s diplomatic break with the UAE marks a major escalation.
