FG, REA sign landmark MoU for 24-hour power in Universities

The Federal Government and Rural Electrification Agency (REA) signed a historic agreement to provide round-the-clock electricity to tertiary institutions nationwide.
This Energizing Education Programme (EEP) initiative targets persistent power challenges hindering academic excellence across Nigeria.
During the May 7 signing at University of Abuja’s solar-powered mini-grid site, Education Minister Dr. Maruf Alausa praised President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He confirmed ongoing construction of 1.1-12.5MW mini-grids in 24 institutions, with four to six additional projects planned through TETFund collaboration.
Phase IV will extend clean energy solutions to eight more universities including UNILAG and UI.
Dr. Alausa emphasized how reliable power enhances research, staff productivity, and student entrepreneurship while boosting GDP.
REA ’s Abba Aliyu reported 100MW already delivered to 24 universities, benefiting 600,000 students and 50,000 staff.
NUC’s Professor Ribadu applauded the sustainable approach to solving institutional power deficits.
University of Abuja’s acting VC Professor Lar thanked stakeholders for slashing energy costs and improving learning conditions.
The Minister of State for Education reinforced government commitment to educational transformation through renewable energy partnerships.
