Court jails doctor for secretly filming friends, colleagues in bathroom

A Glasgow-based doctor, Ju Young Um, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for secretly filming friends, colleagues, and guests using the bathroom and shower.

The 34-year-old anaesthetist installed hidden cameras inside air fresheners and a smoke alarm in his Glasgow flat and staff quarters at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

Hidden cameras and secret recordings
Um told the court he committed the acts due to insecurity about the size of his penis, claiming he wanted to compare himself with others.

He admitted to filming 30 people, including 21 men and nine women—four of them fellow doctors.

A Glasgow Sheriff Court jury found him guilty on 23 counts under the Sexual Offences Act, covering incidents from November 2022 to August 2023

He first used a mobile phone to record a friend showering through a window, then advanced to using concealed cameras in shared spaces.

One victim became suspicious of air fresheners pointed at the toilet and shower.

The discovery led to recovery of more devices, including one inside a smoke alarm.

Betrayal and breach of trust

Several victims testified, including one doctor who felt “shocked and betrayed” after discovering he had been filmed in the toilet at Um’s flat.

Another doctor was filmed nine times while showering and using the toilet over a three-month period.

Um also rented out a room in his flat via Airbnb, where unsuspecting guests were also recorded.

Police recovered multiple recording devices, a mobile phone, a laptop, and a storage drive containing explicit footage.

Mental health claims and sentencing

During the trial, Um claimed he suffered from body dysmorphia and had been diagnosed with suspected gigantism as a teenager.

He said he only received a formal diagnosis of body dysmorphia after his arrest.

His lawyer acknowledged the distress caused to the victims and stated that Um accepted his actions were “morally wrong.”

Legal consequences

Sheriff Owen Mullan described Um’s actions as a severe invasion of privacy.

He imposed an 18-month custodial sentence, a nine-month supervision order, and a 10-year registration on the sex offenders list.

He said, “Your victims were friends, colleagues, and guests. They had no idea you were recording them.”

Fraser Gibson, Procurator Fiscal for Glasgow and Strathkelvin, said Um acted in a calculated and premeditated manner, abusing trust for his own sexual gratification.
