EFCC arrests eight suspects for illegal mining in Ogun

EFCC operatives from Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 captured two Chinese nationals and six Nigerians for illegal mining in Ogere, Ogun State.
Acting on intelligence, officers conducted surveillance before raiding the site last Friday.
Authorities identified the suspects as Zhang Hang Lin, Gao Pei Hai, and six Nigerian collaborators. During the operation, they seized three trucks loaded with suspected lithium powder and other minerals. Investigators also confiscated a Toyota SUV, phones, lithium samples, and personal documents.
Meanwhile, EFCC officials confirmed the suspects operated without proper licenses, violating Nigeria’s mining laws. The commission stressed that illegal mining harms both the economy and environment through unchecked resource exploitation.
Furthermore, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale warned that all suspects would face prosecution after completing investigations. He urged citizens to report suspicious mining activities, emphasizing community cooperation in fighting economic crimes.
This crackdown highlights Nigeria’s intensified efforts to protect mineral resources from illegal operators. As the case develops, the commission promises to update the public on judicial proceedings. Recent arrests signal stronger enforcement against smuggling networks targeting the nation’s solid minerals.
Environmental activists have applauded the operation while calling for stricter mine monitoring. Illegal miners often damage ecosystems and evade revenue payments, depriving communities of development benefits. The EFCC maintains its zero-tolerance stance, vowing to prosecute offenders under relevant laws.
With Nigeria losing billions annually to illegal mining, this arrest demonstrates renewed commitment to resource protection. The commission continues tracing networks behind such operations nationwide, ensuring comprehensive justice. Citizens remain crucial partners in safeguarding national assets through timely intelligence reporting.
