Breaking: India, Pakistan agree to ceasefire after intense clashes

India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire following weeks of escalating military tensions and deadly cross-border strikes.
United States President Donald Trump on Saturday, May 10, 2025, announced the truce on Truth Social after overnight talks mediated by American officials.
Trump wrote, “India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire. Peace must prevail in the region.”
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed the ceasefire, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to peace and national sovereignty.
Indian sources stated both countries directly negotiated the ceasefire without involving third-party talks or agreements on broader issues.
The Pakistani military initiated the communication, contacting India’s Director General of Military Operations to de-escalate the worsening conflict.
Hostilities intensified Saturday after India allegedly struck Pakistani military bases overnight, prompting a retaliatory operation from Islamabad.
India claimed it responded “effectively” to the attacks and maintained its military advantage in the region.
Tensions spiked following last month’s massacre of tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir, which New Delhi blamed on Pakistan.
India launched “Operation Sindoor” targeting locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir after the massacre.
Pakistan denied involvement in the attack and condemned India’s military response as unprovoked aggression.
US Vice President JD Vance, who previously called the conflict “none of our business,” shared the ceasefire announcement without additional comment.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised both governments for choosing peace and initiating plans for future diplomatic discussions.
Rubio confirmed he spoke with both countries’ foreign ministers before the ceasefire was publicly announced.
India and Pakistan have fought three wars over Kashmir and remain locked in a decades-long territorial disputes.
