Truck collision on Eko bridge claims two lives

In a shocking incident, a fatal road crash on Sunday morning of May 11, 2025, has claimed the lives of two dispatch riders on Eko Bridge, Lagos.
According to reports, the accident occurred inward the Alaka corridor, involving two fully-loaded Mack trucks during early hours of May 11.
Eyewitnesses said one truck, with registration number T-10357 LA, was reportedly speeding before the collision.
The truck driver allegedly dozed off while driving and lost control of the vehicle.
He rammed into another truck, identified by plate number KHA 107 XM, causing a violent impact.
As a result of the crash, a 20-foot container fell off one of the trucks.
The falling container landed on the two dispatch riders, crushing them instantly.
Emergency responders confirmed both riders dead at the scene of the incident.
Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) responded quickly after being alerted by witnesses.
They arrived from under the bridge, where officers had been stationed for routine traffic monitoring.
A Lagos State Government ambulance conveyed one severely injured truck driver to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.
Two other truck drivers involved in the crash reportedly fled the scene immediately.
LASTMA officials believe they ran away out of fear of arrest or reprisal from onlookers.
LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the incident in a press statement.
He described the crash as “avoidable” and blamed reckless driving and driver fatigue for the loss of lives.
LASTMA diverted traffic from the affected section through Coastain Roundabout toward Alaka and the National Stadium axis.
The agency worked with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to clear the wreckage.
Personnel from the Lagos Fire and Rescue Services and Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) joined the operation.
Also present were officers of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) and the Iponri Police Division.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the unfortunate deaths.
He urged truck drivers to drive responsibly and conduct thorough vehicle checks before hitting the road.
Mr. Bakare-Oki called for increased vigilance among operators of heavy-duty vehicles to prevent further tragedies.
He stressed that LASTMA would intensify its road safety awareness campaigns across Lagos.
Authorities continue to search for the fleeing truck drivers as investigations proceed.
Residents and motorists described the crash as shocking and called for better regulation of articulated vehicles.
The tragic incident adds to growing concerns over road safety on major Lagos highways.
