In a significant boost to Manchester United’s summer plans, Liam Delap is said to be favouring a move to Old Trafford over anywhere else.

He isn’t short of suitors, either. In fact, one report claimed that almost every Premier League club would be open to signing the 22-year-old star, who is preparing to oversee his final two fixtures with Ipswich Town.

The Tractor Boys’ relegation back down to the Championship all but confirmed that Delap’s tenure would come to an end after only one season at Portman Road.

He has shown he’s more than capable of leading the line for a top-flight outfit, and Ipswich included a £30 million release clause in the event they failed to retain their PL status in 2025/2026.

According to Ben Jacobs, United and Chelsea are currently ‘the two leading clubs’ in the race for the centre-forward, with the former ‘optimistic’ they can get a deal over the line.

Delap is biding his time over a concrete decision on his future until each team’s European fate is set in stone; Chelsea sit fifth-placed following a weekend defeat to Newcastle United, while the Red Devils’ only route to playing in the Champions League next term is by winning the Europa League on May 21.

Additionally, he wants to have chosen his next destination prior to the Under-21 Euros, which kicks off on June 11.

Why United’s Delap pursuit could be scuppered

Of course, Delap’s desire to ply his trade among Europe’s elite does pose a potential risk if Ruben Amorim’s side are beaten by Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao later this month.

The funds are in place for INEOS chiefs to sanction the arrivals of both Delap and No.10 target Matheus Cunha before any sales are made, although negotiations on personal terms will be necessary in the coming weeks.
