MAKE IGBO LANGUAGE COMPULSORY IN GOVERNMENT-OWNED SCHOOLS: HON JUDE AKPUA PhD

The Deputy Majority Leader, Anambra State House of Assembly, Dr. Jude Akpua is soliciting the state government to make Igbo language a compulsory subject of learning in secondary and tertiary institutions owned by the state to keep the Igbo language alive.

Dr. Akpua, a member representing Njikoka II in the state assembly, made this statement when he was addressing members of the press in Awka. He expressed his bitterness, saying that most scholars and prominent people in Igbo land don’t allow their children to speak Igbo at home. He explained the importance of the government enacting a law that will prevent the Igbo language from going into extinction. Just as he said, this negligence can bring about the fall and death of the Igbo culture and traditions.

Dr. Akpua described language as a human characteristic used in communication. He told all parents and guardians to always teach their wards the Igbo language in their respective homes, which will encourage them to always speak the language wherever they find themselves.
