Why Man Utd failed to reach an agreement with Lecce for Patrick Dorgu

Manchester United tried to reach an agreement with Lecce on the transfer of Patrick Dorgu but fell short in their attempts.

The Red Devils are keen to bolster their left front as Luke Shaw’s injury ordeal isn’t showing signs of ending anytime soon, while Tyrell Malacia is still working on regaining his best physical shape following a one-year stop.

In recent months, the club pursued some of the finest left-backs in the world, including the likes of Alphonso Davies and Nuno Mendes. However, both men have now on the verge of signing new deals with Bayern Munich and PSG respectively, thus closing the door on Man Utd.

Therefore, the Premier League giants have now set their sights on Dorgu, a 20-year-old Denmark international who has been taking Serie A by storm in recent months, identifying him as their new priority target.

The Lecce star is a left-back by trade who is also capable of playing as an inverted right winger, as it’s been the case at Via del Mare this season.

In recent days, Man Utd held talks with the player’s agent who reportedly expressed his client’s openness for the move. Therefore, the club’s representatives headed to Italy for a meeting with their Lecce counterparts which took place on Tuesday.

According to Sky Sport Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, United put €30 million on the table in addition to €5 million in various bonuses. However, these figures weren’t enough to convince the Serie A minnows who aren’t keen on selling their prized asset anyway, preferring to wait until the summer to open up for a transfer.

For his part, Fabrizio Romano reveals Lecce have set their asking price at €40 million, and they aren’t willing to offer any discounts, while also mentioning interest from Napoli.
