“I built My mansion before I became minister” – Adelabu reacts to viral video

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has denied claims that he constructed a luxury mansion within two years of assuming office.

A viral video published by an online platform alleged that Adelabu funded an extravagant lifestyle through corrupt means, citing a newly built mansion allegedly completed during his tenure.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Femi Awogboro, the minister described the report as “false, mischievous and a calculated attempt” to tarnish his image.

He explained that construction began in November 2021 and was completed in August 2023, a month before his appointment in September 2023.

The minister backed his account with dated photographs of the construction process, official building approvals, and other relevant documents.

Adelabu said he has long been recognised as a major investor in real estate, agriculture, and hospitality, with visible projects in Ibadan and beyond.

“I began and completed this project before my appointment. I only moved in this year due to work schedules and timing constraints,” he said.

He noted that he has lived in the same location since 2010, when he first built and unveiled the original structure during his banking career, adding that the current property is a redevelopment carried out 12 years later to meet the demands of his political engagements.

Adelabu said his investments have contributed significantly to job creation, accusing the platform of attempting to discredit him and undermine President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He called for a retraction of the report, warning that failure to do so could lead to legal action.
