# Anambra State Government has called for stronger efforts towards improving disaster response and management in Nigeria.
The Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, made the call while speaking at the Light House, Awka, when a team comprising officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) paid him a courtesy visit as part of their feasibility study on Anambra State’s disaster response capacity.
While commending the team for the visit, Ibezim assured them of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s led administration’s readiness to partner with relevant agencies in the interest of the citizenry, and expressed concern over the inability of the Federal Government and international bodies to proffer permanent solutions to disasters confronting Nigeria, especially flooding, stressing that it is high time measures such as the dredging of dams were implemented to save citizens from the yearly ordeal.
In his remark, the Chief Disaster Reduction Officer, NEMA Abuja office, Mr. Terungwa Igue, and the UNDP National Project Coordinator, Insurance and Risk Finance Facility, Mr. Henry Akwitti, urged Anambra State to adopt a more proactive approach to disaster management, and recommended that the state should key into the Disaster Response Contingency Fund Scheme to ensure that it can manage disasters effectively with or without external financial support.
# The Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA) General
Chikelue Iloenyosi has confirmed that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) under the leadership of Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau will lend support and participate fully in the burial ceremony of the late football legend, Christian Chukwu.
The FA boss earlier in the week was at the glass house to visit Alhaji Gusau for an interactive session geared towards acceleration of football development in Anambra State and Nigeria at large and Chukwu’s burial was one of the points for discussion during the tete-a-tete with the number football administrator in the land.
The funeral rites of the late legendary and iconic football personality, Christian Chukwu will hold from Friday, 15th to Sunday, 17th August, 2025 when he will be laid to rest in his country home.
The former senior nation team captain and ex-coach died on 12th April, 2025 at the age 74.
# The lawmaker representing Aguata two Constituency at the Anambra State House of Assembly, Dr. Tony Muobike, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and security agencies to investigate, and if found culpable, punish INEC officials found with thumbprinted ballot papers at Aguata High School, Ekwuluobia during Saturday Anambra South Senatorial bye-election.
Hon. Muobike raised the alerm while monitoring the exercise at Primary School Umuona, in his community,
The lawmaker, who is a member of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Situation Room in the local government area, said such practice should be avoided; as it is capable of destroying democracy.
Muobike however commended peace conduct of the exercise in other Polling Units monitored, but noted low turnout of voters.
# The Anambra State Police Command has commenced investigation into a fatal motor accident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 16th August 2025, at People’s Club/Limca Road, Obosi, involving a Lexus Jeep and two tricycles popularly known as Keke.
Preliminary information at the disposal of the Command reveals that the driver of the Lexus Jeep rammed into the tricycles, resulting in the unfortunate death of one occupant, while others sustained varying degrees of injury. The vehicle was subsequently abandoned at the scene as its occupants fled.
Anambra Spokesperson, SP. Tochukwu Ikenga in a press release stated that
Police operatives attached to Isiowulu Division quickly responded, secured the area, recovered the abandoned vehicle, and evacuated the victims to a hospital, where one was later confirmed dead.
Further enquiries have established that the recovered Lexus Jeep does not belong to any security agency in the State.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident and appeals to residents of the area to remain calm and cooperate with the Police, as efforts are being intensified to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
# Governor Chukwuma Soludo has accused the APC Governorship candidate of beating up the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu with thugs in Ezinifite in Nnewi South Local government area.
Governor Soludo, who was speaking to the press shortly after casting his vote at his polling unit, Ofiyi Square, 002, Isuofia, said that the information is one of the updates he got from the field.
While describing the unfortunate situation as predictable, the Governor wondered why someone would leave his polling unit to other people’s polling unit, calling for the will of the people to be allowed to prevail.
# The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG Godwin Eze who is the Supervising Officer for the Anambra Bye-elections has cautioned individuals and groups against circulating fake election results, recycling old videos or making inciteful remarks capable of misleading the public and causing a breach of peace during the ongoing Anambra bye-election.
AIG Eze emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force and sister security agencies remains fully committed to providing adequate security for a peaceful, free, and credible electoral process.
The Police boss further warned that anyone found engaging in acts of misinformation or conduct likely to disrupt public peace will face the full weight of the law.
Eze, therefore, urged members of the public, especially media practitioners and social media users, to verify information from credible sources before sharing. Citizens are advised to remain law-abiding, cooperate with security personnel, and avoid actions that could undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
# Accreditation and voting commenced at exactly 8.30 am at Irefi Oraifite poling units 003 to 006, with all the sensitive and none sensitive materials readily available.
As at eleven o’clock in the morning, all the ballot boxes in the area were almost filled while voters were still many on cue.
The situation was the same at Community primary school Ezumeri Oraifite polling units 001 and 002 where they have 700 and 744 registered voters respectively, but there were some issues at Ezumeri Oraifite Hall, polling units 07 and 08 where the BIVAs was not responding due to network issues and the newly registered voters were denied assess to vote since their names were not yet on the register.
Ozubulu ward 3, polling units 011, 012, 013 and 014 witnessed heavy presence of voters who turned out en masse as early as eight o’clock in the morning to cast their votes, just as was the case at Umunakwa Ihembosi which has two polling units, 001 and 002.
# The Member Representing Aguata One Constituency at the Anambra State House of Assembly and Chairman House Committee on Education, Hon. Anayo Okpalaeke, said INEC lived up to expectations, election peaceful, but marred by voter apathy.
At Central School Igboukwu, the Chairman of the Anambra State Internal Revenue Services, AIRS, and leader of Soludo Support group in the community, Dr. Greg Ezeilo, who commended voters’ turnout at Polling Units visited, said the election was peace, expressing optimism that the wish of the people will prevail.
# The Ministry of Transport, Anambra State, in collaboration with IJE Rides Ltd, has held a sensitisation and safety awareness programme on inland waterways transportation at the River Port, NIWA Office, Bridge Head, Onitsha.
Anambra Commissioner for Transport, Mrs. Patricia Igwebuike, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Engineer Michael Obiekwe, In her address, said the initiative reflects the state’s commitment to safe and efficient waterway transport.
She noted that the life jackets would help prevent fatalities and enforce safety compliance.
The Chairman Anambra West, LGA, Hon. Fidelis Nnazor, represented by Lady Chinyere Muoya, commended the government for prioritising commuter and operator safety, stressing the need for community involvement in sustaining the initiative.
The Area Manager of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Onitsha Area Office, Sir Victor Nwokocha, called for transparency in waterway transport administration and praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo for ensuring the life jackets reached the state.
Representatives of IJE Rides Ltd said the company is introducing innovations to make Anambra’s waterways safer, faster, and more reliable. They pledged continued partnership with the state in training and equipping operators.
