Ned Nwoko Proposes Ranches in Every LGA, Aims to Curb Grazing Conflicts

Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North) has introduced an ambitious bill proposing the establishment and management of ranches across all 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The initiative aims to modernise livestock farming, tackle open grazing, and enhance food security nationwide.
During an interview with reporters in Abuja, the vice-chair of the Senate Committee on Environment outlined the bill’s comprehensive framework. It includes mechanisms for state-level land allocations, environmental safeguards, and transparent funding via public–private partnerships. A dedicated Ranch Management and Development Agency is also proposed to oversee compliance and promote sustainable ranching practices.
Nwoko emphasised the bill’s focus on preventing conflicts between herders and farmers, ensuring livestock welfare, managing disease control, and safeguarding community rights over land use in line with existing laws. The legislation also encourages private sector involvement, offers provisions for fair compensation and resettlement for affected communities, and aims to integrate ranching into local economies to boost job creation and economic opportunity.
