CHAN 2024: Nigeria Bow Out Despite Morale-Boosting Win Over Congo

Nigeria’s journey at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 ended in bittersweet fashion after a 2-0 victory over DR Congo in their final Group D match. Though the win offered a vital lifeline and restored pride, it proved insufficient to propel the Super Eagles-B into the quarter-finals.

In a match marked by resilience and late drama, Anas Yusuf and Sikiru Alimi delivered the goals that finally broke Nigeria’s long-standing winless streak in the tournament. The breakthrough arrived in the 56th minute, when Yusuf finished off a headed setup from Alimi. Then, in stoppage time, Alimi sealed the win with a graceful header following a VAR-induced red card for Congo’s Charles Atipo.

Group D Ends: Sudan and Senegal March On

Despite the spirited performance, Nigeria’s effort was overshadowed by a goalless draw between Sudan and Senegal — a result that ensured both teams progressed from the group. Sudan topped the table on goal difference, while Senegal also advanced, leaving Nigeria in third with three points. Congo exited bottom with just two points from the group.

A Glimmer of Hope Amid Early Exit

Before the match, coach Eric Chelle had reflected on the team’s disruptive preparation, having lost multiple key players to overseas transfers at a critical moment. “Eight of our players from the qualifiers left … we had to rebuild on the fly,” he noted.

Nigeria’s victory, though unable to revive their CHAN ambitions, stands as a testament to grit and redemption. The team had failed to register any goals in their first two matches, losing 1-0 to Senegal and suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to Sudan.

With the bitter taste of elimination still lingering, attention now turns to the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in September, where the Super Eagles must regroup and refocus.
