FG Deactivates Over 13 Million Social Media Accounts for Code Violations

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the shutdown of over 13 million social media accounts across platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) for violating the national Code of Practice on offensive content.
The disclosure was made in the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report, jointly prepared by major technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, and TikTok, under the supervision of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
According to the report, a total of 13,597,057 accounts were deactivated, while 58,909,112 posts were removed for containing offensive content. The platforms also received 754,629 user complaints, with 420,439 posts later restored after successful appeals.
NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations, Hadiza Umar, commended the platforms for complying with the guidelines, noting that the efforts were in line with the government’s objective of ensuring a safer digital space for Nigerians.
She reiterated that service platforms operating in Nigeria are required to register locally, pay taxes, and enforce safety measures to protect users from harmful content.
