SERAP Takes RMAFC to Court Over Proposed Salary Hike for Tinubu, Top Officials

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Abuja against the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) over its plan to increase salaries for Nigeria’s top political leaders.

Filed under FHC/ABJ/CS/1834/2025, the suit challenges the proposed salary adjustments for the President, Vice-President, governors, their deputies, and members of the National Assembly, arguing that the proposed increase is both unlawful and unconstitutional.

SERAP contends that the salary hike violates provisions of the 1999 Constitution and breaches the RMAFC Act. The organisation further notes the disconnect between the proposal and Nigeria’s economic hardships, reminding that more than 133 million citizens live in poverty.

The suit seeks an injunction to halt any salary increase, as well as a court directive for the commission to reduce remuneration to reflect Nigerians’ current economic realities.

SERAP also invoked a 2021 judgment by Justice Chuka Austine Obiozor, which ordered RMAFC to revise downward lawmakers’ salaries to mirror the prevailing economic conditions.

No hearing date for the case has been set.
