The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved 14 political associations to advance to the next stage of registration as political parties, paving the way for their potential participation in Nigeria’s 2027 general election.
Out of 171 applications submitted, 157 groups failed to meet the preliminary requirements, according to a statement by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.
The 14 pre-qualified associations will now undergo further scrutiny, including physical verification of their claims, before receiving full registration.
Among the successful groups are the All Democratic Alliance (ADA)—rumored to be a platform for potential opposition coalitions against President Bola Tinubu’s administration—alongside the African Transformation Party (ATP), Advance Nigeria Congress (ANC), and Abundance Social Party (ASP).
Others include the African Alliance Party (AAP), Citizens Democratic Alliance (CDA), Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA), Grassroots Initiative Alliance (GRIP), Green Future Party (GFP), Liberation People’s Party (LPP), National Democratic Party (NDP), National Reform Party (NRP), Patriotic People’s Alliance (PPA), and People’s Freedom Party (PFP).
Olumekun explained that each application was evaluated based on compliance with Section 222 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Section 79 of the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.
He emphasized that party registration is an ongoing process, and the Commission remains open to considering new applications that meet the legal criteria.
INEC has invited the interim chairmen and secretaries of the cleared associations to a briefing at its Abuja headquarters on September 17, 2025, to outline the next steps.
The Commission assured all applicants, successful or not, that they would receive official communication regarding the outcome of their applications within 24 hours.
