COPDEM in crisis: Niger ex-chairman rejects removal, dares national leaders DDM News

(DDM) – A fresh leadership crisis has erupted in the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM), Niger State chapter, after the former chairman, Madaki Shaibu Inuwa, on Sunday morning openly rejected the appointment of a new state chairman.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Inuwa, in a strongly worded statement, declared that no activities would be permitted to proceed under the newly appointed leadership until his demands for transparency and accountability were met.

He insisted that he had been unjustly removed and accused certain national figures, including one Kevin, of playing questionable roles in the process that sidelined him.

According to Inuwa, the 24-hour deadline he earlier issued for clarification from COPDEM’s national body had elapsed without a response, thereby justifying his decision to halt all organizational functions in Niger State.

He described the development as a violation of internal democracy, stressing that a coalition founded on protecting democratic values must not fall into the same patterns of exclusion and manipulation it claims to resist.

The embattled former chairman further demanded to know what role the state executive members played in the appointment of his successor.

He argued that Niger State members deserved full disclosure on whether their voices were considered before the announcement of the new leadership.

Inuwa questioned how a “collective decision” could be reached when those most affected by the decision were not properly consulted or included in the process.

He warned that unless transparency was restored, the crisis could undermine COPDEM’s credibility both within Niger State and across Nigeria.

Political observers note that the Niger State dispute comes at a delicate time for COPDEM, which has been positioning itself as a watchdog against democratic erosion in the country.

Critics argue that internal conflicts such as this expose the coalition’s vulnerability to the same political intrigues it condemns in mainstream parties.

Grassroots members of COPDEM in Niger State are now said to be divided, with some supporting Inuwa’s call for accountability, while others are aligning with the new leadership in hopes of moving forward.

The situation has also raised questions about the influence of the national body over state chapters, and whether decisions at the top truly reflect the will of the members on the ground.

As of press time, COPDEM’s national leadership had yet to issue a public response to Inuwa’s challenge, leaving uncertainty hanging over the coalition’s operations in Niger State.

Analysts warn that if unresolved, the conflict could deepen factionalism within COPDEM and weaken its organizational strength ahead of future political mobilization.

For now, Inuwa maintains that his words stand: no activities in Niger State until the truth is revealed.
