Controversy Rocks Kano as Abba Yusuf Pushes Anti-Gay Marriage Bill

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has approved the transmission of a bill to the State House of Assembly seeking to outlaw same-sex marriage and other practices deemed immoral.

The governor gave the approval during the 31st State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House Annex in Kwankwasiyya City.

In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, Governor Yusuf said his administration would not compromise on the values and teachings of Islam.

He insisted that Kano must continue to uphold its cultural and religious heritage.

According to him, the proposed bill specifically prohibits same-sex marriage as well as practices locally referred to as Madugo and Liwadi.

These acts, he stressed, are considered forbidden in Islam and contradict the moral integrity of society.

“Under no circumstance will we allow acts that contradict our religion and traditions to take root in Kano.

This government is duty-bound to protect the moral fabric of our state,” Governor Yusuf declared.

The governor further explained that once the Assembly passes the bill into law, offenders found guilty of engaging in or promoting same-sex marriage and related practices will face strict legal consequences.

He also expressed confidence that lawmakers would handle the bill with urgency, considering its importance to the moral and social wellbeing of Kano residents.

The move, he noted, reflects his administration’s commitment to protecting the teachings of Islam while safeguarding the cultural identity of the state.

Kano has long been one of Nigeria’s most conservative states, where issues relating to morality and religion are often at the forefront of public policy.

This new legislative push by Governor Yusuf is expected to draw national attention, especially given ongoing debates on human rights and personal freedoms across the country.

Observers believe that the proposed law will strengthen the enforcement of morality-based governance in Kano, but it may also spark reactions from civil rights groups who have consistently argued against criminalizing same-sex relationships.

The bill’s progress will now depend on the Kano State House of Assembly, which is expected to deliberate on the proposal in the coming weeks.

Residents and stakeholders await the lawmakers’ decision, which could further define the balance between cultural traditions and constitutional rights in Nigeria.
