Varmy hails Delta community for rescuing kidnapped officer DDM News

(DDM) – The Nigerian Army has commended residents of Bomadi, Delta State, for their vital support during the rescue of a kidnapped senior officer.

Delta State is a region rich in both cultural heritage and natural beauty, located in the southern part of Nigeria. Renowned for its diverse ethnic composition, the state is home to various ethnic groups, including the Urhobo, Itsekiri, Ijaw, Isoko, and Anioma people, each contributing their unique traditions, languages, and lifestyles to the vibrant tapestry of the area. The state is also notable for its significant economic activities, particularly in agriculture and oil exploration, with fertile lands supporting the cultivation of crops such as oil palm, rubber, and cassava. Additionally, its waterways, notably the River Niger, play a vital role in transportation and commerce, providing a livelihood for many of its inhabitants. The capital city, Asaba, situated on a hilltop overlooking the Niger River, serves as an administrative and economic hub, bustling with markets, trade, and opportunities.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Major M. D. Josiah was abducted on September 8 when armed men stormed his lodge in Bomadi around 2 a.m.

Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen fired sporadically before whisking the officer away under the cover of darkness.

According to Army spokesman Captain Liyasu Rijau, troops from 63 Brigade quickly mobilised and launched a rescue mission the following day.

Brigade Commander Brigadier General M. A. Shonibare said the swift and coordinated operation was a testament to the growing trust between soldiers and local communities.

He praised his men for their bravery and acknowledged the cooperation of community leaders who helped track the abductors to Tuomor Waterside.

The operation culminated in the successful rescue of Major Josiah, who sustained gunshot wounds but was immediately evacuated for medical treatment.

His survival brought relief to residents of Bomadi, who had feared reprisals following the abduction.

General Shonibare said the Army would continue to strengthen ties with communities across Delta State to tackle security threats.

He assured that the Nigerian Army remains committed to restoring peace and safeguarding lives in the South-South region.

Security analysts note that the incident underscores both the persistent threat of armed groups in riverine areas and the importance of civilian-military collaboration in combating insecurity.

Community leaders in Bomadi have since expressed gratitude to the Army for the rescue and pledged continued support in intelligence sharing.

The Army reiterated its call for residents to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.

The rescue has been hailed as a morale booster for troops in Delta State, where security challenges ranging from militancy to kidnapping persist.
