Atiku Says Tinubu’s Suspension of Fubara Is Still Constitutional

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned President Bola Tinubu, insisting that the recent suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Rivers State lawmakers was unconstitutional and beyond presidential authority.

Atiku’s remarks follow Tinubu’s decision this week to lift the six-month suspension and restore Fubara, his deputy, and the state assembly members to office.

In a statement posted on his X platform, Atiku called the initial suspension of elected officials a breach of democratic norms and warned that such actions signal a creeping slide toward authoritarianism. He argued that the president had no constitutional mandate to suspend an elected governor or lawmakers.

The suspension came under a declaration of emergency in Rivers State, issued on March 18, 2025, amid political tensions and accusations of governance paralysis and pipeline vandalism.
