Tension in Benue as Governor’s Aide, Activist Go Missing

Worry and confusion have gripped Benue State after the disappearance of two citizens, including a close aide to Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The missing aide, Atu Terver, serves as Principal Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth and Media Mobilisation.

Reports say he vanished on Tuesday while traveling from Makurdi to Abuja.

The second case involves Asom Jerry, a popular social media activist. His disappearance has trended online, with conflicting claims about his fate.

While some allege he was arrested by police, others insist his whereabouts remain unknown.

Mrs Civir Terver, wife of the governor’s aide, confirmed that her husband left Makurdi on Tuesday to meet family in Abuja. However, he never arrived.

“The case was reported at a police station in Abuja. They said they were investigating, but I have received no useful information,” she told reporters.

She also revealed that Governor Alia’s office had not contacted her since her husband went missing.

The spokesperson for the Benue Stat Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, dismissed claims of Jerry’s arrest, stressing that she had no such information.

She added that Terver’s disappearance occurred outside Benue.

“I don’t have information on the activist’s alleged arrest. For Terver, it happened in Abuja, not in Benue,” she explained.

Efforts to reach the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Kula Terso, were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, the Austin Agada-led faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue condemned the silence of Governor Alia on the matter.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Daniel Ihomun, the group described the disappearances as alarming.

“The sudden disappearance of notable Benue citizens, including critic Asom Jerry and Governor Alia’s aide Atu Terver, has created fear and uncertainty.

These incidents strike at public trust in government and security agencies,” the statement read.

The faction criticized Governor Alia’s “silence and inaction” and urged security operatives to intensify investigations. It demanded that those behind the disappearances be brought to justice.

It also challenged the state government to provide credible updates, assuring citizens that their lives and rights matter.

The cases have now heightened tension in Benue, with residents calling for urgent answers and accountability from both state and federal authorities.
