Man Arrested for Attempting to Smuggle Cocaine Into Kuje Prison

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has arrested a man identified as Njimogu Ikedi for attempting to smuggle cocaine and other hard drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The spokesperson of the FCT Command, Samson Duza, confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Monday in Abuja.

According to Duza, Ikedi was apprehended at about 12:45 p.m. on Saturday during a routine check while visiting an inmate.

Security personnel on duty uncovered the banned substances concealed in his clothing.

Items recovered included cocaine, cannabis sativa, and other psychoactive substances.

Following the discovery, the Controller of Corrections for the FCT Command, Christopher Jen, ordered Ikedi’s immediate arrest.

He was later handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

The development comes weeks after the NDLEA announced a major breakthrough in its war against drug cartels.

Earlier in September, the agency intercepted a cocaine consignment valued at ₦5.3 billion and codeine worth ₦1.1 billion.

According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the seizure was part of a two-week-long operation that dismantled an international organized criminal group (IOCG) operating between Nigeria, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Operatives recovered 17.9 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside lace materials packed with local charms.

The cartel leaders, identified as Muaezee Ademola Ogunbiyi, Shola Adegoke, and freight agent Olashupo Michael Oladimeji, were arrested in Lagos.

The NDLEA noted that the syndicate intended to ship the drugs to Sydney, Australia, with a street value exceeding 5.3 million Australian dollars.

The arrest of Ikedi at Kuje prison underscores the growing threat of drug trafficking networks and the desperate tactics used by criminals to infiltrate Nigeria’s correctional facilities.

Authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and support ongoing efforts to rid Nigeria of drug-related crimes.
