The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the country on Tuesday and Wednesday, warning residents and state authorities to prepare for possible flash floods.
In its latest weather outlook, NiMet said northern states including Kaduna, Kano, Gombe, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Bauchi, Adamawa, Zamfara, and Taraba will likely experience isolated thunderstorms with light rain later in the afternoon and evening hours.
For the central region, the agency forecast cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine and light rain over the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, and Niger in the morning, followed by isolated thunderstorms with moderate rainfall later in the day.
In the South, NiMet predicted thunderstorms and moderate rainfall over Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Lagos, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Bayelsa, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River during morning hours.
It added that heavier downpours and flash floods are likely in Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers later in the day.
Looking ahead to Wednesday, NiMet said northern states such as Bauchi, Gombe, Borno, Adamawa, and Taraba will see light morning showers before isolated thunderstorms return in the afternoon and evening.
Central states like Plateau and Nasarawa are expected to record thunderstorms and moderate rains during the morning, with more widespread rainfall later in the day.
In the southern belt, cloudy skies will dominate early hours in Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across most states in the afternoon.
NiMet urged residents in flood-prone areas to activate emergency response measures and advised motorists to drive cautiously during rainfall.
It also cautioned farmers against applying fertilizers or pesticides just before heavy rains to prevent leaching of nutrients.
The agency further advised households to secure loose objects, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and avoid staying under tall trees to prevent accidents from falling branches.
Airline operators were also reminded to obtain updated, airport-specific weather reports for safe flight planning.
NiMet encouraged Nigerians to stay informed by regularly checking its official website for weather updates.
