NNPP disowns Kwankwaso’s APC move, says it’s personal not party decision

(DDM) – The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has distanced itself from Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting the move is strictly personal.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the clarification came on Monday from the NNPP’s National Secretary, Dr. Ogini Olaposi, during a press briefing in Lagos.
Olaposi explained that Kwankwaso and his Kwankwasiya Movement were no longer part of the NNPP, having been expelled earlier for alleged anti-party activities.
He stressed that any negotiations involving Kwankwaso should be regarded as his private undertaking, not an official action of the NNPP.
The clarification followed Kwankwaso’s weekend announcement that he and his political loyalists were ready to join the APC ahead of 2027.
Kwankwaso, a former Kano governor and 2023 NNPP presidential candidate, however, warned that his group would not be used and dumped after elections.
But Olaposi countered that Kwankwaso’s statement confirmed his final exit from the NNPP.
“His declaration only proves what we have said before—that he is no longer with us,” the NNPP scribe stated.
The party, he said, harbours no hostility toward the APC and remains open to possible alliances in the future.
However, he emphasized that any coalition decisions would be made collectively by NNPP members and leadership, not by individuals.
According to him, the NNPP is currently focusing on rebuilding its nationwide structures, consolidating grassroots support, and strengthening internal cohesion.
Party insiders say this rebuilding is crucial as the NNPP tries to reposition itself as a strong alternative voice ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Analysts note that Kwankwaso’s defection to the APC, if it materializes, could reshape Kano’s political landscape and further divide opposition forces nationally.
Some observers also believe that the APC may use the move to consolidate influence in the North, while the NNPP seeks to retain its core base of supporters.
Kwankwaso’s Kwankwasiya Movement, known for its red cap symbolism, has historically commanded significant youth support in Kano and other Northern states.
But with his expulsion from NNPP and his leaning towards APC, questions are now being raised about the movement’s future political identity.
For now, the NNPP says it remains focused on internal unity, grassroots mobilization, and strategic planning for the 2027 race.
