Tragedy struck Kogi State on Sunday, September 21, 2025, when gunmen ambushed and killed two police officers in Isanlu, Yagba East Local Government Area.
According to local sources, the officers, attached to MOPOL 70, were on duty along Ilafin Road when the assailants struck.
The attack has left residents in shock and raised concerns over the growing wave of insecurity in the state.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Yagba East Local Government, Dr. Joshua Dare Monday, described the killings as both brutal and heartbreaking.
He noted that the officers died in active service while protecting lives and property.
“This tragic incident is not only an attack on the Nigeria Police Force but also an assault on the peace and security of our land,” he said.
“It represents a calculated attempt by enemies of progress to destabilize our society and instill fear in our people.”
Dr. Monday paid tribute to the slain officers, describing them as martyrs of peace and guardians of justice.
He stressed that their courage and loyalty would remain etched in the history of Yagba East.
The council chairman also extended condolences to the bereaved families, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Kogi State Command, assuring them that the community deeply shares in their grief.
He further called on security agencies to launch a full-scale investigation into the attack and ensure the perpetrators face justice.
Dr. Monday vowed that his administration would continue to support law enforcement officers across Yagba East.
He emphasized that the council would strengthen collaboration with the Kogi State Government, the military, and other agencies to keep the area safe.
“These two officers of MOPOL 70 died in active service.
We must honor them not just with words but by ensuring their sacrifice is not in vain.
The enemies of peace must be defeated,” he declared.
The chairman also prayed for the peaceful repose of the fallen officers and asked God to grant strength to their families.
He urged all Nigerians to remain united in support of security operatives.
