Suspend Wike Now! Civil Society Challenges Tinubu Over Florida Property Scandal

The Edo State Civil Society Coalition for Human Rights has demanded the immediate suspension of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over corruption allegations tied to luxury properties in Florida, United States.

The group also urged President Bola Tinubu to distance his administration from Wike, warning that shielding him would amount to “endorsing corruption at the highest level.”

In a statement signed by its Coordinator, Marxist Kola Edokpayi, and Secretary-General, Comrade Hon. Aghatise Raphael, the coalition insisted that Tinubu must act quickly to protect the government’s credibility.

“We state firmly and without equivocation that President Tinubu must immediately and publicly dissociate himself from Nyesom Wike and order an investigation into the allegations.

Failure to do so would be a monumental betrayal of public trust and a desecration of the government’s professed anti-corruption posture,” the group declared.

The coalition described Tinubu’s continued alliance with Wike as a dangerous signal that corruption is not punished but rewarded.

They demanded Wike’s suspension pending a “thorough, impartial, and transparent” probe, along with immediate action from anti-graft agencies like the EFCC and ICPC.

“Shielding Wike will spell political doom for the fight against corruption.

History will not absolve any administration that chooses complicity over conscience, and Nigerians will not forgive a betrayal of public trust,” the statement added.

The call followed fresh revelations about Wike’s alleged purchase of multimillion-dollar homes in Florida through cash transactions registered in the names of his wife and children.

On Tuesday, a group of Nigerian journalists led by Yinka Tella launched a petition to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Florida state officials.

The petition, hosted on Change.org, urged authorities to investigate the properties and block Florida from becoming a safe haven for looted Nigerian funds.

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore had earlier claimed that steps were underway to secure an international warrant for Wike’s arrest and extradition.

Sowore’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, also petitioned the Florida Attorney General on September 22, accusing Wike of secretly buying over $6 million in real estate through suspicious cash deals.

The petition listed three properties in Winter Springs, Seminole County, Florida.

These included a 5,000 sq. ft. residence valued at $535,000 transferred to Wike’s son Jordan, a 3,401 sq. ft. home acquired for $459,157 and transferred to Joaquin, and another 3,901 sq. ft. property worth $465,000 given to Jazmyne.

Sowore’s team argued that Wike’s public service income could not justify such purchases, while his failure to declare the assets violated Nigeria’s constitutional code of conduct for public officers.

The case has now drawn international attention, with calls mounting for Tinubu to prove his anti-corruption drive is more than rhetoric.
