JUST IN: Ladoja Crowned 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland

Former Oyo State governor, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has officially been crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

The coronation ceremony took place on Sunday at the historic Ose Meji Temple in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area. Before the formal rites, the new monarch received the traditional Akoko leaf at the Labosinde Compound, Oja’ba, Ibadan, signifying his confirmation as the Olubadan.

Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to present Oba Ladoja with the staff of office and other instruments of authority later at Mapo Hall, the symbolic seat of Ibadan traditional power.

Ladoja’s ascension follows the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who joined his ancestors on July 7, 2025.

His death left the revered throne vacant, paving the way for Ladoja, next in line, to emerge as the Olubadan-designate.

The coronation drew prominent chiefs, political leaders, and cultural custodians from across Yorubaland.

Traditional chants, drumming, and gun salutes marked the occasion as indigenes and residents of Ibadan thronged the venue to witness the historic installation.

Born on September 25, 1944, Oba Ladoja is not only a respected politician and businessman but also a long-serving member of the Ibadan traditional council.

He previously served as Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2007, where he left a legacy in governance and grassroots development.

The Olubadan stool remains one of the most revered traditional institutions in Nigeria due to its unique succession system, which ensures peaceful transitions without rivalry.

With his coronation, Oba Rashidi Ladoja now assumes full responsibility as the custodian of Ibadanland’s customs, traditions, and unity.
