Insecurity, double taxation breaking Ndi Anambra, says Chief Moghalu

(DDM) – Chief George Moghalu, a frontline political figure in Anambra State, has raised alarm over the growing complaints of insecurity and double taxation by residents and traders across different markets in the state.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Moghalu disclosed his concerns during a live political programme on Authority Radio 91.9 FM, Nnewi, where he was hosted by Charles Edeh to discuss his party’s manifesto with Ndi Anambra.

According to Moghalu, he was deeply moved after listening to traders and residents narrate the struggles they face daily due to insecurity and the burden of multiple levies imposed on them by different agents in markets across Anambra.

He described the situation as heartbreaking, noting that such complaints reflect the harsh realities facing ordinary citizens.

The politician, who has remained vocal about the need for reform in the state, emphasized that double taxation has crippled businesses and discouraged economic growth, while persistent insecurity has left many traders living in fear.

He explained that if such challenges are not urgently addressed, the overall prosperity of Anambra will continue to dwindle.

Moghalu assured Ndi Anambra that his mission is to change the current narrative and restore the state to the path of peace, prosperity, and greatness.

In his words, he reiterated a popular Igbo saying: “O teka aka osi di njo, oga adi mma,” which means that with time and the right leadership, things will surely get better.

Moghalu further noted that governance should be people-centered and that his party’s manifesto is built on addressing core issues affecting the people.

He stressed that creating a secure environment and eliminating unfair levies in markets will form part of the foundation for restoring public confidence in governance.

Anambra State, one of Nigeria’s commercial hubs in the Southeast, has in recent years faced growing security concerns, especially linked to violent attacks, kidnappings, and criminal activities that have threatened business activities in cities such as Nnewi, Onitsha, and Awka.

Equally, traders and business owners across the state have repeatedly cried out over what they describe as “double and multiple taxation,” where different groups and agents impose levies ranging from union dues, government charges, to illegal fees by touts.

Stakeholders argue that such practices discourage investments and weaken the growth of small businesses, which form the backbone of Anambra’s economy.

Chief George Moghalu, a former National Auditor of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a seasoned political actor in Anambra, has consistently advocated for reforms in governance, especially in areas concerning security, market policies, and infrastructural development.

He has also positioned himself as a strong voice for the people, repeatedly insisting that governance must reflect the aspirations of citizens rather than burden them further.

His recent appearance on Authority Radio was seen as part of his wider consultations with Ndi Anambra ahead of the next political transition in the state.

Supporters believe his interventions represent a message of hope for those who have lost confidence in the system due to the worsening economic and security climate.

Moghalu ended his radio engagement by reaffirming his commitment to set Anambra on the path of greatness and to pursue reforms that will directly impact ordinary people’s lives.

For many traders and residents, his words provided a rare sense of reassurance that their struggles are not being ignored.

Whether such promises will translate into concrete action remains to be seen as the political season unfolds in Anambra.
