Stray Bullet Kills Fresh Graduate in Osun

A fresh graduate of the Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke, identified as Taoreed, has been confirmed dead after being struck by a stray bullet during a violent clash between rival cult groups.
The incident happened on Tuesday, September 23, shortly after Taoreed collected his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) call-up letter from the institution.
Witnesses said the young graduate was not involved in the clash but was caught in the crossfire.
The chaos reportedly started a day earlier, on Monday, September 22, when gunshots were fired during signing-out celebrations by some final-year students.
That clash left one student dead, suspected to have been targeted by cult members.
A student of the institution, who spoke with PUNCH Metro on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the campus had been tense since the first attack.
He said, “Everyone was running for safety. Sadly, Taoreed was hit by a stray bullet while passing by.”
The death has thrown the school community into mourning, with many describing Taoreed as a promising young man whose future was cut short.
His death came just as he was preparing to serve the nation through the NYSC scheme.
Cult violence has remained a recurring crisis in many Nigerian campuses despite repeated crackdowns by security agencies and school authorities.
The killings have sparked renewed calls from students, parents, and community leaders for tighter security around campuses in Osun State.
Local sources said security operatives have since stepped up patrols around Esa-Oke to prevent further clashes.
However, students expressed fear that reprisals could still occur if the cult groups remain unchecked.
Taoreed’s death highlights the devastating impact of cult-related violence on innocent students and families.
His passing has once again brought to light the urgent need for stronger anti-cult campaigns and stricter law enforcement in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
