Again, Bandits Kill 27 in Kogi

At least 27 people have been killed after heavily armed bandits attacked several communities in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The tragic incident occurred late Saturday night, sparking panic and grief among residents already living in fear of repeated assaults.

A military source confirmed the attack  on Sunday, October 5, describing the assailants as “heavily armed” and using sophisticated weapons during the deadly invasion.

“Bandits killed 27 people in Yagba West, Kogi State, just yesterday, and it was not reported. They invaded the area with heavy weapons,” the source said.

Yagba West, the home local government of Senator Sunday Karimi, who represents Kogi West and chairs the Senate Committee on Services, has witnessed multiple violent raids in recent weeks.

Just two days earlier, bandits struck in Bareke, Egbe, within the same local government, kidnapping a woman and her two children around 2 a.m.

According to residents, the woman’s husband managed to escape with injuries after the attackers stormed their home, which is located near Senator Karimi’s residence in Egbe.

“It happened very close to the house of Senator Sunday Karimi,” one community member said. “The woman and two of her children were kidnapped right from their home.”

The Friday attack came barely 24 hours after another assault in Ejiba, where a commercial bus was ambushed and all passengers abducted.

During that attack, a motorcyclist identified by his registration number, 256, was reportedly shot dead.

Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, gunmen had invaded Bethel Farm in Ejiba, kidnapping three people.

The same gang attacked a bread distributor that morning on the Ejiba–Odo-Eri road, injuring one worker in the process.

Photos obtained by Sahara Reporters showed a burnt motorcycle belonging to local vigilante members who confronted the bandits during one of the attacks.

A separate report released on September 26 revealed that Okunran community, also in Yagba West, was completely deserted after days of relentless assaults by the same armed groups.

The footage showed abandoned homes and empty streets as residents fled to safer areas.

The continuous attacks have deepened fear across Yagba West, with locals pleading for urgent military intervention.

“We can’t sleep again; every night brings new gunshots,” one resident lamented.

Security analysts warn that the escalating violence in Kogi mirrors the growing insecurity across Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.

For now, communities in Yagba West are calling on the Federal Government to act swiftly before more lives are lost.
