The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that one of its National Commissioners, May Agbamuche-Mbu, has taken over as the Acting Chairman of the electoral body.
This transition followed the formal handover of duties by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who is proceeding on terminal leave after completing his two-term tenure.
The announcement was made on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Photos shared by INEC showed Professor Yakubu officially handing over documents to Mrs Agbamuche-Mbu, marking the beginning of her tenure in an acting capacity.
The development comes just days before President Bola Tinubu is expected to formally announce Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the next substantive INEC Chairman.
Reports indicate that a Council of State meeting has been scheduled for Thursday to ratify the appointment.
Professor Yakubu, who was first appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in October 2015 and reappointed for a second term in 2020, is the longest-serving INEC Chairman since Nigeria’s return to democracy.
Under his leadership, INEC introduced major electoral reforms, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal, which improved transparency in elections across the country.
Agbamuche-Mbu, a lawyer and one of the longest-serving National Commissioners, is expected to oversee the commission’s operations pending the confirmation of the next chairman.
She has served on various committees within INEC, including those overseeing legal affairs, voter education, and election logistics.
The smooth transition reflects INEC’s internal administrative continuity, ensuring that ongoing electoral processes, including voter registration exercises in the Federal Capital Territory, are not disrupted.
