Tinubu confers national honour on Yakubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally accepted the departure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the completion of his second term in office.

To honor his contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, the President conferred on him the National Honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

Professor Yakubu, who first assumed office in November 2015, served two consecutive five-year terms after his reappointment in 2020.

During his tenure, he oversaw key elections, including the 2019 and 2023 general elections, as well as numerous off-cycle polls across the country, solidifying his role in shaping Nigeria’s electoral processes.

President Tinubu, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, commended Yakubu for his leadership and commitment to organizing free and fair elections during his time at the helm of INEC.

“His efforts have been instrumental in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy,” Tinubu noted.

In a letter dated October 3, 2025, Yakubu expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve the nation as INEC Chairman.

The conferment of the CON honor marks a recognition of his dedicated service to Nigeria’s democratic progress.
