* The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam in a press briefing highlighted some of the notable breakthroughs recorded on major incidents in the State within the period under review.
“In the early hours of 6th February 2025 at the second niger bridge, the Joint Security team comprising of the Police and AVG Operatives on a mission to rescue the abducted Honourable State House of Assembly member representing Onitsha North, Hon Azuka, his lifeless body was regrettably found at the scene. (May his soul rest in perfect peace).
“Given the above on the same day, the Command Operatives in a joint operation with Anambra State Vigilante Operatives acting on intelligent-led information arrested Nine suspects actively involved in this unfortunate incident and recovered two pump action guns. One of the suspects sustained a gunshot injury in his leg during a gun duel with the Police operatives.
“We have also neutralised more than one hundred (100) notorious criminals and successfully destroyed many criminal camps in Ufuma, Eziowelle, Achalla, Ogbaru and many other places in the State”. CP Itam said
* A diesel tanker overturned while attempting to enter Mainsea Filling Station near Borome Roundabout, spilling its contents into nearby drainage systems.
The incident, which occurred during the tanker’s maneuver to discharge fuel, led to chaos as hoodlums quickly arrived, scooping up the spilled diesel with containers earlier today.
The Residents who spoke to newsmen confirmed that the tanker fell on its own.
Firefighters successfully managed the situation by cooling the fuel to avoid ignition, while security forces controlled the growing crowd of scavengers. Fortunately, no lives were lost, and there were no reported casualties.
* The Anambra State House of Assembly has paid a condolence visit to the family of their deceased member, Hon.Justice Azuka in his country home at Onitsha in Onitsha North local government area of Anambra State.
The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt Hon.Somtochukwu Udeze who led House members to the visit, consoled the wife and mother as well as numerous family members and relatives who were on hand, describing the death of Hon. Azuka as shocking and painful to the State House of Assembly.
Rt. Hon. Udeze enjoined them to trust in God, who he said, is the true comforter, and prayed God to grant the soul of Hon. Azuka eternal rest.
* The Chairman of Njikoka Local Government Area, Hon. Chinedu Ononiba
has officially hand over the newly constructed “Solution Corpers Lodge” to
the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC).
Ononiba who was represented by his Deputy, Hon. Fidelia Okafor, in her remarks stated that the handover of the “Solution Corpers Lodge” is a key step in enhancing the living conditions of the youth-serving in Njikoka.
In their separate speeches, NYSC Anambra State Coordinator, Mrs. Blessing Iruma, and Mr. Ernest Mbom, the Njikoka NYSC Inspector, express their immense gratitude for the hospitality shown by Ndi Njikoka.
They praised the local government for providing such comfortable accommodation for the corps members, which will undoubtedly contribute to their welfare and successful service year.
* The Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Youth Empowerment Programme, Dr Nelson Omenugha has pledge solidarity with the union after a successful NUJ election urged the journalists to uphold professionalism, objectivity and balance reporting when writing their news reports.
Omenugha further enumerated the various achievements of the Soludo led administration ranging from free education, free antenatal and delivery, 1 Youth 2 Skills program, free distribution and planting of improved seedlings, employment of teachers and health workers, massive infrastructural development and road networks.
He described Soludo as a youth friendly Governor who deserves a second term.
* All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant in the forthcoming Anambra Governorship Election, Sir. Paul Chukwuma has described the visit of the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as historic.
Ganduje arrive Anambra State on Saturday, February 8, 2025, to commission the newly established APC State Office in Awka.
Speaking on the visit, Sir. Chukwuma
emphasised the importance of grassroots engagement and inclusivity, stating that the party had created platforms for women, support groups, and youth participation in leadership roles.
* Police operatives attached to the Abagana Police Divisional Headquarters and AVG Operatives, Abagana has
arrested Mr. Anthony Kosisochukwu Okafor aged 37 years of Adegbe Village, Abagana, Njikoka LGA over the death of his elder brother, Mr Emmanuel Okafor aged 45 years.
The suspect confessed to having engaged the victim in a fight over a heated argument about using foodstuffs in the house.
According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, Kosisochukwu was said to have used a stick to pierce the deceased chest. The victim was rushed to the hospital and was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.
* De Gamechanger FC, Awka on Friday, defeated St Nwadinso Football Academy in the opening match of the 2025 Neros Pharmaceuticals/ Anambra State Football Association (FA) Cup tournament.
De Gamechanger FC defeated St Nwadinso 7-6 on penalties to face NNL side, Solution FC in the Quarter-finals of the tournament.
The match, which was played at the Awka Township Stadium, kickstarting the 2025 edition of the tournament, ended in a goalless draw, before proceeding to penalty shootouts.
The prestigious competition saw a total of 11 football clubs competing alongside defending champions and Nigeria National League (NNL) side, Solution FC and last year’s runners up, Edel FC.
* Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor has received the new executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), led by the re-elected chairman, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, who paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Awka.
Addressing the union leaders, Dr Mefor congratulated them for being the true choice of the people in their respective positions, adding that the Soludo government is committed to democracy, while the media is the bastion of democracy.
According to him, “The Soludo government is committed to democracy. We were under pressure to try to interfere in the election, but we said people should be allowed to make their choices because this is democracy. The media is the bastion of democracy because, as the only agency that has the constitutional responsibility of holding government accountable to the people, its job is to defend democracy by holding government and governance accountable. You have been doing that job fairly well despite the challenges you face in the field.”
Earlier in his remarks, the NUJ Chairman, Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, assured that the union would continue to support the commissioner and the ministry in realising his dreams and those of the Soludo administration.
* The Senior Pastor Deeper Love Assembly International NUJ Complex Awka, Pastor Joseph Nwabueze has charged the Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ) Anambra State Chapter to embrace love, Unity as a principle for progress.
Nwabueze gave the charge while conducting Dedication Prayers for the newly inaugurated Exco during the post election February NUJ Congress at the Godwin Ezeemo NUJ State Council Secretariat, Awka as the body welcomed a new administration after a period of electioneering campaigns that witnessed bickering , bitterness, campaign of calumny, peddling of half-truths or falsehood, exergerated misrepresentation of facts as opponents slugged it out during the electioneering campaigns before the journalists made their choice to return Dr. Emeka Odogwu for a second term in office as the Chairman.
In his sermon titled ‘Put Love above all things ( Col 3:13,14), the prelate said that love should be placed above all other values in life saying that if love leads other desires and aspiration of life would later fall in place or be achieved in the long run.
Moreover, the State Chairman, Odogwu who professed that he has forgiven all wrongs against his person urged others to equally do same. He insisted that neither him nor any NUJ member was above the NUJ body extending a hand of fellowship to those who lost in the election as he resolved to break his own records and attract more values , human capital and infrastructural development to the union. “I thank everyone, We are one big family”.
Odogwu urged every Chapel that were still owing check off dues to pay up adding that those NUJ chapels due for election should put their house in order and elect their officers before the next month’s Congress.
