NNPP’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate Bishop Isaac Idahosa demanded urgent electoral reforms during a Channels TV interview today.
The cleric specifically advocated stronger accountability mechanisms while appearing on The Morning Brief program, linking transparent elections to national stability.
He criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other public officials for lacking consequences, arguing that this absence perpetuates a cycle of failure.
“We don’t punish anybody for what they do; there are no consequences, so they keep on repeating it,” Idahosa remarked.
He stressed that without accountability, inefficiencies and errors within the electoral body will likely continue.
“INEC does this, and nobody puts them to check, and then it repeats it. Once there are no consequences for your actions or inactions, then a repeat will occur because there is no accountability,” he added.
Furthermore, Idahosa lamented the imbalance of power within Nigeria’s governance framework.
Notably, he emphasized that certain government officials have significantly expanded their influence.
“As a result, these leaders now eclipse the institutions they swore to uphold. By prioritizing personal agendas over public service mandates, they’ve inverted their roles.”
By restructuring power dynamics, their actions undermine foundational democratic structures. This shift risks prioritizing personal authority over collective governance mechanisms.
This dynamic, he warned, continues to undermine effective governance throughout the country.
In addition, the NNPP Vice Presidential candidate proposed a significant reform to Nigeria’s election process.
He suggested that all elections—presidential, senatorial, and gubernatorial—should occur on the same day.
“I want to suggest where all elections are done on the same day.
That will help curb a whole lot of things—presidential, senatorial, gubernatorial, all on the same day. It will cut costs and will yield the desirable results,” Idahosa explained.
He pointed out that staggered elections often lead to complications, including bandwagon effects that can distort outcomes.
Regarding the state of the NNPP, Idahosa dismissed rumors of internal divisions within the party.
He affirmed his close relationship with former Kano State Governor and NNPP leader, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
“To begin with, I’m still very close to my principal; he was here last week—the 8th of February—when I celebrated my 60th birthday. So we are still very in touch, and we are very close,” Idahosa said.
He strongly emphasized that any claims regarding factions within the NNPP are entirely baseless.
Notably, the party expelled members instigating internal discord to maintain organizational unity.
This decisive action follows confirmed violations of collective governance principles.
“We do not have factions; those supposed factions have been removed from our ranks.
Moreover, there is no room for division in our party.
We stand united under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso,” he asserted with confidence.
Bishop Idahosa’s comments come at a critical time as Nigeria grapples with challenges in its electoral process and governance structures.
His call for reforms and enhanced accountability reflects growing concerns among political leaders and citizens about the integrity of democratic institutions in the country.
