Two minors shot, 11 arrested as students clash over girlfriend in Niger  |

Two minors, Imaran Hassan, 11, and Nura Jibrin, 10, have reportedly sustained bullet wounds following a violent clash involving students of Annur Islamic Model School in Chaichainiya and some youths near Zuma Bread Bakery in Suleja, Niger State. 

According to available information, the clash, which occurred on Thursday night, reportedly stemmed from a dispute over a girl.

The “lover boy”, Umar Idris of SSS 3, who was said to be the leader of the gang from the model secondary school, had led his gang armed with dangerous weapons to attack his local rivals within the same community.

An eyewitness who did not disclose his identity said the fight broke out on Thursday around 9:11 p.m., shortly after the Tarawih prayer. 

“Over twenty youths and students led by an SSS 3 student, Umar Idris, invaded the area armed with dangerous weapons.

“During the clash, gunshots were fired from an unknown direction, hitting two minors. 

“The victims were identified as 11-year-old Immarana Hassan and 10-year-old Nura Jibrin, who sustained gunshot wounds to their thighs.

“They were immediately rushed to Suleja General Hospital, where they are responding to treatment,” he said.

When contacted, the spokesman for the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the clash in a statement on Sunday, adding that 11 suspects were arrested for thuggery and breach of public peace.

“On 6/3/2025 at about 11 pm, reports were received that youths and some secondary school students were fighting at the Chaichainiya area of Kaduna Road over issues of lovers led by one Umar Idris of the same area

“It was reported that during the incident, gunshots were heard from different directions which hit two victims on their laps; one Nura and Imrana, both 10 and 11 years respectively. 

“However, during the police covert operation, 11 suspects including the said Umar Idris were arrested and under police investigation.

“A preliminary investigation revealed that an officer of a sister security agency was responsible for the shooting that led to the gunshot injuries of the two victims,” Abiodun stated.

The PPRO indicated that an investigation was being intensified for further necessary action and that further development would be made known to the public.
