El-Rufai: SDP Set to Welcome Governors, Lawmakers and Other High-Profile Politicians

According to reports, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) is poised to attract more prominent politicians, including governors and legislators, following the recent exit of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Shehu Musa Gabam, the National Chairman of the SDP, confirmed that El-Rufai’s departure has sparked significant interest among politicians from various parties.

He noted that this shift could lead to more influential members from the APC and other political groups making similar moves.

While he did not name specific individuals, speculation surrounds former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as potential new members of the SDP.

However, Fayemi has denied any intention to leave the APC, reaffirming his loyalty to the party.

Political analysts suggest that El-Rufai’s defection highlights ongoing rifts within the ruling party, where issues related to internal democracy and leadership conflicts are becoming increasingly apparent.

Gabam reiterated that the SDP is committed to fostering grassroots democratic engagement and has ruled out the possibility of merging with other political entities, viewing such actions as potentially chaotic.

“The SDP is not in alignment with the proponents of a merger of political parties. It is a recipe for chaos,” he added.
