The Federal Road Safety Corps has appealed to motorists to avoid driving or reduce speed during heavy rainfall to minimise crashes.
Wasiu Ogunmefun, the Sango-Ota unit commander of FRSC, made the appeal on Wednesday in Ota.
Mr Ogunmefun identified excessive speeding as one of the risk factors contributing to accidents as well as unnecessary loss of life.
“We are appealing to motorists to maintain their vehicles by ensuring that their brake lights, lighting system and wipers are working well.
“In addition, drivers of any broken-down vehicles should use caution signs at enough distance to give a warning to oncoming vehicles,” he said.
The unit commander emphasised the need for motorists to park in a safer place during heavy rainfall because of poor visibility, which sometimes results in accidents.
He said it was improper to begin searching for a mechanic when cars broke down rather than towing them to clear the road of any obstruction that might cause collisions.
Mr Ogunmefun reiterated the FRSC ‘s commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property during, before and after the rainy season.
He also enjoined them to embrace defensive driving during the rainy season to prevent accidents.
The rainy season sets in April and ends in October across the country.
