Abbas urges EU to boost economic investments in Africa

April 17, 2025 – Abuja, Nigeria- During a high-level meeting at the National Assembly, Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, urged the European Union (EU) to expand its economic investments in Africa.

Specifically, he advocated moving beyond conventional support like election monitoring and security training.

This appeal was addressed to Gautier Mignot, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, who attended the session.

Abbas stressed the need for the EU to prioritize deeper economic engagement with African nations.

Furthermore, he pointed out that reduced financial grants from the Trump administration create an opportunity for Europe to increase investments.

“The EU must go beyond aid and actively contribute to Africa’s economic progress,” he asserted.

The Speaker also reaffirmed the National Assembly’s willingness to partner with the EU across multiple sectors.

Ambassador Mignot welcomed the proposal, acknowledging Nigeria’s strategic importance in Africa.

He emphasized strengthening ties between the EU Parliament and Nigeria’s legislature, noting mutual benefits from closer collaboration.

“Nigeria remains a key ally, and we are eager to deepen our relationship,” Mignot stated.

The discussions highlighted a shared commitment to enhancing Africa-Europe economic cooperation.

As both sides explore investment opportunities, this meeting could mark a turning point in fostering long-term development.

Stakeholders now await concrete actions that will translate dialogue into tangible growth for Nigeria and the broader continent.
